Classic Sichuan


Classic Sichuan (16 days)

Day 1. Arrival in Chengdu from your country or other places. If possible, will do some city birding with guide at the park around hotel. Stay at the Vegas Hotel in the downtown of the city. The elevation is about 500 m.

Day 2 Drive 4-5 hours to Labahe Forest Park and stay at Luming Hotel 1900m high inside. Start mammal watching in the afternoon.

Day 3-4 According to the park,there are about 5-6 wild Giant Pandas in this area and we may have slightly chance to view during middle of March to Middle of April and which happend in recent two years.
In two full days will uphill by the shuttle bus and walked down/around to looking for the main target here Red Panda which is not very difficult and other mammals include Golden Sunb-nosed Monkey, Takin, Musked Deer, Sambar, TIbetan Macaque and Tufted Deer. When night drive/walk around hotel, we will can see Red and White and Complex-toothed Flying Squirrel, Masked Palm Civet, Hog Budger, Chinese Goral etc.

Day 5 Last morning at Labahe then transfer to Wolong

Day 6 one day at Balangshan and night drive

Wolong/Balangshan is the main habitat of Giant Pandas of Sichuan and aslo we call Kingdom of Pheasants with 12 species and also mammals such as Blude Sheep, Leopard Cat, Tufted Deer and even Red Pand in the valleys.

Day 7 long day drive up to Tibetan Plateau and stay at Hongyuan

Day 8 Hongyuan to Ruoergai only 130km

Day 9-11 Ruoergai for mammals and some night drive

The landscape changes from alpine gorge to vast alpine meadow. On the way heading to the meadow, the Siberian Roe Deer and endemic Sichuan Red Deer are possible to be found in scrub land. Once reached the grassland, the Himalayan Marmot and Plateau Pika are numerous, both provide plenty food for Wolf and Tibetan Fox. With quite a bit luck, the elusive Pallas's Cat and Chinese Mountain Cat is also possible to be seen. Although taxonomic debate still around this creature, it at least should be a endemic subspecies of Asian Wild Cat. The grassland also is a important breeding ground of the elegant Black-necked Crane. Will spent four nights on the grassland with elevation around 3600 m.

We’ll explore coniferous forest near the town, looking for Sichuan Sika Deer, Sichuan Red DeerChinese Serow and Tufted Deer. The Yellow-throated Marten is also possible. At least one night walk will carry out along the road.

Day 12 drive to Tangjiahe Nature Reserve

We will explore two main road use our vehicle relaxed in the reserve and climb up one trial reach a pass at 2600 m on foot. Depends on the weather, night walk will carry out along the road.

Day 13-14 Tangjiahe

This reserve was established in 1976, which mainly for preserving the Giant Panda and its habitat. Nowadays, Tangjiahe is being regard as the best site to look for typical forest mammals in central China. The Chinese Goral, Chinese Serow, Reeve’s Muntjak, Tufted Deer, Wild Boar and recently split Sichuan Takin, could be easily found along the road in day time. During the night walk with spotlight, the Leopard Cat, Northern Hog-badger, Masked Palm Civet also on the possible list. Rhesus and Tibetan Macaques are common, and even the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey is also possible to find just around the hotel with some luck. On top of them, one of our CMT guide even telescoped a Giant Panda in this reserve once! Who will be the next lucky dog? Will spent three nights at a very nice hotel in this beautiful place. The elevation of the hotel is around 1800 m, and the highest pass we will reach in the reserve is about 2600 m.
